2021-5 update: skip higher-resolution transcoding, Fengji cross-content collections, and separate CMS improvements

This update addresses frequent requests to skip higher output resolutions and adds Fengji collections, which I have planned since last year. I spent over a week implementing collections in the Advanced administration system and separate CMS. While doing so, I also refined the separate CMS, rewriting code and adding many small details.

Design

EFVCMS has varied content types: videos, movies, series, articles/novels, galleries/comics, audio albums and live streams. Previously they existed independently with no links, leaving content fragmented in a cms frontend. We needed an aggregation feature with UGC, allowing users to create and collect content themselves. Inspired by Douban lists and YouTube playlists, Fengji collections were born.

Architecture

Fengji collections

Collections aggregate multiple content types. The API supports movies/videos, novels/articles, galleries/comics, series and audio albums. The separate CMS currently supports collecting series and movies/videos. This feature connects the diverse content in EFVCMS and is worth trying for both SEO and functionality.

Updates

  • One: Added a switch to skip higher resolutions. For configured outputs 360p, 720p and 1080p, uploading a 720p source with this enabled skips 1080p and produces only 360p and 720p. Portrait videos are also supported, assessed by height.
  • Two: Added Fengji collection management to EFVCMS and complete cms api endpoints for your own CMS or our separate cms.
  • Three: Integrated collections into the separate cms. Signed-in users can create collections and save movies/videos or series into them. Galleries/comics, novels/articles and audio will follow later.
  • Four: Replaced Load More in the separate cms with attractive page-number navigation, so returning does not require loading more again.
  • Five: Improved the separate cms, fixing untappable categories when opening the mobile menu and occasional 502 errors on the first playback-page visit, accelerating playback-page loading and adding navigation loading animations.
